The Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin Partners with SSM Health to Host Sensory Friendly COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic in Fond du Lac

The SSM Health Treffert Center, in partnership with the Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin and Southeastern Wisconsin, have scheduled a one-of-a-kind sensory friendly vaccination clinic for individuals five and older and their families.

The Saturday, February 5 session runs from 8 am – noon at the Treffert Center, 371 E. 1st Street, Fond du Lac. Second vaccines will be given on February 26th at the same location.

Pfizer vaccines are available, as well as Pfizer booster shots for those 12 and older who have received their vaccination at least five months prior.

Private rooms will be available, and other measures will be taken to provide a positive, calm and supportive environment for all.

Those participating in the sensory-friendly vaccine clinic can expect flexibility, patience, and support all the way through the vaccination process. Prior to the vaccination appointment, a social narrative will be available to help prepare participants for vaccination.

During the clinic, participants can expect a lower sensory environment, sensory fidgets, distraction strategies, private rooms, and other individualized accommodations as needed.

“We know that getting any type of vaccine can cause uncertainty with any individual,” says Megan Puddy, BCBA, Treffert Center. “We are taking steps ahead of time to help participants and their families prepare for vaccination and look forward to providing an inclusive, supportive experience for children and adults seeking vaccination.”

The vaccine is free. Participants should bring their insurance or Medical Assistance card if one is available. Second doses will be offered on February 26. Mask wearing is encouraged.

“Our goal is to ease the stress associated with vaccines and remove barriers for those with Autism or anyone else that wants to get vaccinated but is challenged by the typical vaccination setting,” according to Kirsten Cooper, executive director of the Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin. “The Autism Society is so grateful to SSM Health for their partnership in this effort to increase vaccine accessibility.”
